Guwahati, February 2024: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that over 8,500 youths from tea garden areas will showcase the traditional Jhumur dance at the ‘Jhumoir Binandini’ programme on February 24 in Guwahati. The event, set to be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and ambassadors from 60 countries, aims to highlight Assam’s rich cultural heritage, particularly its tea tribes and tribal communities.

The performance, scheduled for 5:30 PM at the Sarusajai Indoor Stadium, will be a grand celebration of Assam’s 200-year-old tea industry and its vibrant music and dance traditions. PM Modi, in a post on X, expressed his enthusiasm for the event, stating, “This programme celebrates the culture of Assam, especially the tea tribes and other tribal communities of the state.”

While no world record attempt will be made, the gathering of 60 ambassadors to witness the event is a historic milestone for Assam. The state government has also announced cash incentives for participants, with Rs 25,000 for each performer and master trainer, and Rs 30,000 for expert trainers. Additionally, Rs 25,000 will be allocated to each tea garden to establish cultural clubs, fostering cultural activities in these areas.

The event will be live-streamed in tea garden areas, ensuring widespread participation and engagement. This initiative underscores the Central and Assam Government’s commitment to promoting the welfare and cultural heritage of the state’s tea tribes and tribal communities.

The following day, PM Modi will attend the Advantage Assam Investment Summit, further boosting the state’s development trajectory.
