Guwahati is set to make history by becoming the first Test cricket venue in India’s northeast region. The city will host the second Test match between India and South Africa from November 22 at the Assam Cricket Association (ACA) Stadium, announced BCCI general secretary Devajit Saikia on Sunday, March 23.
In addition to the Test match, Guwahati will also host its first-ever World Cup matches during the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup, scheduled from September 24 to November 2. The ACA Stadium is expected to host five to six matches of the tournament, marking the first time World Cup cricket will be played in the northeast.
Saikia highlighted that the decision was finalized during the BCCI apex council meeting on Saturday. He expressed gratitude to ICC Chairman Jay Shah and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for their support in establishing Guwahati as a premier cricket destination.
This development is a significant milestone for cricket in the region, putting Guwahati on the global cricket map and providing a platform for fans in the northeast to witness international cricket firsthand. The detailed schedule for the Women’s ODI World Cup is currently being finalized.
