Dibrugarh, Assam – Dibrugarh Police arrested former All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) general secretary Sankar Jyoti Baruah on Monday in connection with a physical assault incident at a petrol pump in Duliajan.
Baruah was summoned for questioning by Duliajan Police after a case (No. 90/2025) was filed against him for allegedly assaulting staff at BN Singh Petrol Depot. After interrogation, he was taken to Dibrugarh Sadar Police Station late Sunday night and formally arrested the next morning.
The case was registered under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, including charges related to assault, obstruction of public servants, and unlawful assembly. Reports indicate that three groups clashed at the petrol pump, leading to the altercation.
Baruah, however, denied involvement in the violence, claiming he only attempted to mediate the dispute. He is expected to be presented before a magistrate as legal proceedings continue.
The arrest has drawn attention due to Baruah’s prominent role in AASU, a key student organization in Assam. Further updates are awaited as the investigation progresses.
