Drug Kingpin Rohit Basumatary Shot, Arrested in Dramatic Arunachal Police Encounter

In a high-stakes operation on Holongi Road near Arunachal Pradesh’s capital, Assam-based drug lord Rohit Basumatary was shot in the legs and apprehended by police following a fierce shootout. The encounter, which left two police officers injured, unfolded after a tip-off about Basumatary’s movements led authorities to intercept a suspicious vehicle carrying narcotics.

According to SP Itanagar IPS Rohit Rajbir Singh, the police had partial details of the vehicle’s registration and acted swiftly when it was spotted near Sogo Resort. “The accused broke through barricades, crashed into an electric pole, and lost control,” SP Rohit explained. When officers attempted to apprehend him, Basumatary fired at the SDPO’s vehicle and fled into a nearby jungle. During the chase, he shot at Sub-Inspector Tamu Bagang, prompting police to return fire, injuring him in the legs.

The operation, led by SDPO Kengo Dirchi, OC K. Yangfo, and Sub-Inspector Tamu Bagang, also saw constable Manish injured. Equipped with bulletproof jackets, the team successfully neutralized the threat. Basumatary, wanted in multiple drug-related cases across Assam and Arunachal, was rushed to RK Mission Hospital for treatment and remains under police custody as investigations continue.

SP Rohit issued a stern warning to drug traffickers: “For the past 10 days, we’ve been tracking narcotics smuggling. I urge kingpins from other states to steer clear of Arunachal. Our capital police are fully prepared to crush these activities with an iron hand.” This dramatic bust underscores the force’s commitment to curbing the drug menace in the region.
