Delhi Schools Go Fully Online for Nursery to Class 5 Due to Severe Pollution

New Delhi, December 15, 2025 – In response to persistently high levels of air pollution in the national capital, the Delhi government has directed all schools to suspend physical classes for students from nursery to Class 5 and switch exclusively to online mode until further notice.

The Directorate of Education issued a circular on Monday stating that in-person attendance for these grades is discontinued across all government, government-aided, and private recognised schools. Schools must conduct classes solely through online platforms to ensure continuity of learning while protecting young children from exposure to hazardous air.

This move comes as Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) remained in the ‘severe’ category, recording 427 on Monday after peaking at 461 on Sunday – the second-highest December reading on record. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), 27 monitoring stations reported ‘severe’ air quality, with several areas like Jahangirpuri and Wazirpur nearing critical levels.

Classes for students in Class 6 and above will continue in hybrid mode (both physical and online options), as per earlier directives issued on December 13.

The decision prioritises the health of vulnerable children, who are at higher risk from respiratory issues caused by toxic smog. Authorities have also enforced Stage-4 restrictions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), including bans on certain construction activities and truck entries.

School heads have been instructed to immediately inform parents and maintain strict compliance, with district officials monitoring implementation.

Experts emphasise the need for urgent measures to reduce pollution sources, while parents have largely welcomed the precautionary step, though concerns remain about maintaining online teaching standards.

Delhi continues to grapple with dense smog, low visibility, and health advisories urging residents – especially children and the elderly – to limit outdoor activities.
