Guwahati, August 30, 2025 – The Assam Congress has sharply criticized Union Home Minister Amit Shah for failing to deliver on promises related to the Assam Accord and Guwahati’s persistent waterlogging issues. Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi, addressing a press conference, accused Shah of indulging in empty rhetoric during his visits to the state without taking concrete actions.Bordoloi highlighted Shah’s unfulfilled pledge to implement the Assam Accord, specifically referencing the Justice (Retd) Biplab Kumar Sharma Committee report on Clause 6, which focuses on constitutional safeguards to protect Assamese identity. “Amit Shah promised in Parliament during the passage of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act that the Assam Accord would be implemented word-for-word. Five years later, what progress has been made?” Bordoloi questioned. The Congress MP also criticized Shah’s handling of Guwahati’s waterlogging crisis. He recalled Shah’s 2020 promise to address the city’s “artificial flooding” by creating large ponds to manage water flow. However, recent heavy rainfall over the past two days has left Guwahati inundated, prompting Bordoloi to ask, “Did Shah take an alternative route to avoid the flooded streets yesterday?” Additionally, Bordoloi raised concerns over a breach of protocol during Shah’s inauguration of a new wing at the Raj Bhavan. He noted that the governor, ranked fourth in the official hierarchy, was present, while Shah, a Union cabinet minister ranked seventh, performed the inauguration. “This is inappropriate and disregards established protocol, ” Bordoloi claimed. The Assam Congress demanded accountability from Shah, urging the central government to provide a clear roadmap for implementing the Assam Accord and addressing Guwahati’s waterlogging issues. The party emphasized that these long-standing concerns require urgent action to fulfill promises made to the people of Assam.
