In Assam politics, it seems that allegations and counter-allegations are now more focused on the wives of leaders rather than the parties themselves. Recently, the people of Assam have witnessed this trend. A few days ago, a heated war of words erupted between the Chief Minister and a Congress MP over allegations regarding the citizenship of Gaurav Gogoi’s wife and her alleged links to Pakistan. This time, a debate has sparked between the Chief Minister and MLA Akhil Gogoi over the job of Akhil Gogoi’s wife. However, both Gaurav Gogoi and Akhil Gogoi have equally targeted the Chief Minister’s wife in the past. On Thursday, a fierce verbal clash took place in the Assembly between Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Akhil Gogoi. During the exchange, the Chief Minister brought up the issue of Akhil Gogoi’s wife, Geetashree Tamuli, who is a professor at B. Barooah College, alleging that she secured her job by depriving more deserving candidates.
In response, Akhil Gogoi challenged the Chief Minister to provide evidence to support his claims. Akhil stated that his wife, who was already teaching at another school, had legitimately appeared for an interview and secured the position at B. Barooah College based on her merit and teaching skills, which are well-known to everyone. Meanwhile, Akhil Gogoi’s wife, Geetashree Tamuli, has also demanded an investigation into the allegations made by the Chief Minister.
Speaking to the media within the Assembly premises, Akhil Gogoi said, “We are not people who are intimidated by Himanta Biswa Sarma. If he has the courage, let him conduct an investigation, and he should also investigate his own assets.” He further added, “My wife has today submitted a request to the principal and the Director of Higher Education for an investigation into the matter. She has also requested to be suspended from her job during the investigation. We are ready to resign today; we are not worried about these tensions. The only issue is that we are educating our son, and we will sell our house if needed.”
