Assam to Operationalize 10 New Co-Districts by August 15

Guwahati, May 15: In a significant administrative move, the Assam government has announced that 10 new co-districts will become operational by August 15, 2025, as per an official notification issued by the General Administration Department.

The notification (No. 375037/496) reveals the proposed headquarters for each of the new co-districts, which will supplement the existing 39 functional co-districts in the state.

List of New Co-Districts & Their Proposed HQs:

  1. Bako-Soigaon Co-District – HQ: Bako
  2. Palashbari Co-District – HQ: Mirza
  3. Rangapara Co-District – HQ: Rangapara
  4. Barchala Co-District – HQ: Thelamara
  5. Mariani Co-District – HQ: Sukanjanjia
  6. Tiyek Co-DistrictTemporary HQ: Kenduguri | Permanent HQ: Sarbaibandha Gaon
  7. Makum Co-District – HQ: Makum
  8. Digboi Co-District – HQ: Panbari Road
  9. Dhalai Co-District – HQ: Dhalai Bazar
  10. Dudhnai Co-District – HQ: Dudhnai

Why This Move?

The Assam government introduced the co-district system in 2023 to decentralize governance, improve administrative efficiency, and enhance public service delivery. The addition of these 10 new co-districts aims to further streamline administration and ensure better accessibility to government services in remote areas.

What’s Next?

With the official notification now issued, the state machinery will work towards making these co-districts fully functional by Independence Day (August 15). Further details regarding staffing, infrastructure, and jurisdictional boundaries are expected soon.
