Guwahati, Assam – A ‘red alert’ has been issued for multiple districts in Assam as relentless rainfall and gusty winds wreak havoc across the state, including Guwahati, where severe waterlogging has disrupted daily life. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) warned of extreme weather conditions, with more downpours expected in the coming days.
Key Districts Under Red and Orange Alerts
The RMC has issued a red alert (warning to take action) for 16 districts, including Dhubri, Goalpara, Kokrajhar, and Cachar, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall (up to 60 kmph winds). An orange alert (be prepared) is in place for 10 other districts, including Kamrup Metropolitan (Guwahati), anticipating thunderstorms and localized flooding.
Guwahati Submerged
Guwahati faced severe waterlogging, with areas like Panjabari, Six Mile, and Chandmari submerged under waist-deep water. Residents used inflatable rafts to navigate flooded streets, while students and office-goers struggled to commute. Many schools and offices shut early to avoid further chaos.
Landslides and Disruptions
Landslides were reported in parts of the city, though details remain unclear. Authorities advised government employees to leave early to prevent traffic gridlocks.
Weather Forecast
The RMC predicts continued heavy rains over the next two days, with Chirang, Baksa, and Barpeta remaining on red alert for Saturday.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma urged residents to stay cautious, emphasizing swift action to mitigate flood risks. Stay tuned for further updates.
