Guwahati, June 23, 2025: The Assam Cabinet on Sunday approved the ‘Shradhanjali’ policy, a humanitarian scheme to repatriate the mortal remains of Assamese youth who die while working or studying outside the state. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma after a cabinet meeting.
Key Features of the Scheme:
- Financial Support: The state government will fully cover transportation costs to bring back bodies of residents who passed away while pursuing employment or education in other states.
- Exclusions: The policy does not apply to individuals traveling for medical treatment.
- Helpline Activation: Families can dial emergency number 112 to initiate the process, verified by Assam Police’s Special Branch.
- Dignified Repatriation: A DIG-level officer will oversee the return of remains with state honors.
A Humanitarian Step
CM Sarma emphasized the emotional and financial burden on families, stating, “These youths leave home hoping for better opportunities. If tragedy strikes, it’s our duty to bring them back with dignity.” He revealed that the government had already assisted in 15 such cases this year before formalizing the policy.
Implementation & Oversight
The Special Branch will manage the scheme, ensuring swift verification and coordination. The CM added that the policy aims to standardize support for grieving families, making it a permanent state initiative.
This move has been widely welcomed as a compassionate gesture towards Assam’s migrant population, estimated to be in the thousands across India.
