Assam Govt Cracks Down on Price Hike: Strict Controls on Fish, Meat in Uruka Markets Ahead of Magh Bihu 2026
Guwahati, January 10, 2026 – With Uruka – the festive eve of Magh Bihu – just days away, the Assam Government has launched stringent measures to curb arbitrary price increases on essential food items like fish, meat, eggs, and milk during the Bhogali Bihu celebrations.
Magh Bihu 2026 falls on Thursday, January 15, with Uruka observed on Wednesday, January 14, marking the start of the harvest festival’s joyous feasts and community gatherings.
Fisheries and Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Minister Krishnendu Paul addressed a press conference on Saturday, announcing firm steps to protect consumers from exploitation by unscrupulous traders.
“Unscrupulous traders will not be allowed to hike prices of fish and meat during the Uruka markets,” the Minister stated emphatically. “Special Task Forces (STFs) have been constituted at the district level to monitor every market, conduct raids, and ensure compliance. Monitoring operations have already commenced.”
The initiative, implemented on the directives of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, has been in effect since last year. The focus remains on delivering high-quality fish, meat, eggs, and milk at fair and reasonable prices to the public.
District Commissioners across Assam have been tasked with immediately fixing retail prices for fish and meat varieties in their respective districts. Any vendor selling above these notified rates will face strict legal action, including penalties for black marketing or exorbitant pricing.
“Both the Fisheries and Animal Husbandry departments have been fully mobilized to enforce these guidelines,” Minister Paul added.
It is a common complaint every year that prices of fish and meat skyrocket abnormally during the Uruka period due to heightened demand for festive preparations. The government’s proactive measures this time are expected to provide significant relief to households, enabling them to enjoy premium-quality items without financial strain.
Authorities have urged all traders to adhere strictly to the fixed prices and prioritize public convenience. The ongoing monitoring campaign by STFs will continue to ensure peaceful, fair, and transparent Uruka markets.
Citizens are encouraged to stay vigilant and report any violations to help make this year’s Bhogali Bihu more enjoyable, affordable, and memorable for everyone in Assam.
