Assam Congress Witnesses Unprecedented Surge in Ticket Aspirants for 2026 Assembly Elections

Assam Congress Sees Massive Rush for 2026 Assembly Tickets: Over 750 Aspirants File Applications at Rajiv Bhawan, Deadline Extended to January 28

Guwahati, January 20, 2026: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) headquarters at Rajiv Bhawan has turned into a bustling epicenter of political activity as hundreds of ticket aspirants and their supporters flock to the party office to secure nominations for the upcoming 2026 Assam Assembly elections. In a remarkable display of enthusiasm, more than 750 aspirants have already submitted their candidature applications, generating over ₹3.51 crore in non-refundable application fees.

The process, which began earlier this month, originally had January 20 as the deadline for submission. However, responding to the overwhelming response and persistent demands from aspirants, APCC President Gaurav Gogoi officially announced an extension of the deadline to January 28. This decision aims to accommodate the large number of party workers and leaders eager to represent the Congress in the crucial polls expected in the coming months.

Record-Breaking Applications and Financial Inflow

According to APCC Treasurer Dr. Hemahari Pegu, nearly 750 ticket aspirants had filed their applications by Tuesday, January 20. Each applicant is required to pay a non-refundable fee of ₹50,000, drawn in favor of the APCC. This fee structure, while controversial in some quarters with criticisms from opposition parties labeling it as “monetization of democracy,” is a standard internal party mechanism to filter serious contenders and generate funds for organizational activities.

The financial impact has been significant: the party collected approximately ₹3.51 crore from these applications alone. Notably, around ₹1.5 crore was amassed on Tuesday itself, highlighting the peak rush on the original deadline day. Tuesday saw Rajiv Bhawan packed beyond capacity, with over 150 applications submitted by 7 PM and many more aspirants collecting forms.

Dhing Leads in Aspirant Numbers

Among the 126 Assembly constituencies in Assam, Dhing has emerged as the hotspot for ticket seekers, with 27 aspirants vying for the Congress nomination there. This intense intra-party competition underscores the perceived winnability of certain seats and the party’s strong grassroots presence in specific regions.

High-Profile Applicants and Show of Strength

The day was marked by the presence of prominent Congress figures, turning Rajiv Bhawan into a convergence point for established leaders, sitting MLAs, former ministers, and emerging youth faces. Some aspirants arrived discreetly, while others made grand entries accompanied by hundreds of supporters, creating vibrant scenes of political fervor.

Notable applicants included:

  • Opposition Leader in the Assam Assembly, Debabrata Saikia
  • Sitting MLA Rekibuddin Ahmed (who led a large procession to submit his papers)
  • MLA Diganta Barman
  • MLA Nurul Hussain
  • Pratik Bordoloi, son of MP and Social Media Department Co-Chairman Pradyut Bordoloi
  • Tanzil Hussain, son of senior leader Rockibul Hussain

Other prominent names from various reports include former minister Pranati Phukan, MLAs Wazed Ali Choudhury, Pradip Sarkar, Abdul Baten Khandkar, and senior leaders like Benu Nath, Gopal Sharma, Utpal Gogoi, and more. The participation of such high-profile individuals signals strong confidence within the party ranks and a unified push under Gaurav Gogoi’s leadership.

Strategic Preparations for 2026 Polls

The early launch of the ticket application process reflects the Congress’s proactive strategy for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections. With the party aiming to challenge the ruling BJP-led government, the massive turnout of aspirants is seen as a positive indicator of organizational strength and voter connect at the grassroots level.

APCC leaders have emphasized that the application process allows ample time for aspirants to engage with voters and bolster party activities. Forms were made available online, and submissions required copies to be sent to respective District and Block Congress Committees, ensuring structured coordination.

The fee is non-refundable in most cases, except when a seat is allotted to an allied party, in which instance the amount may be returned to the applicant for that specific constituency.

Reflecting Party Enthusiasm and Challenges Ahead

The scenes at Rajiv Bhawan—crowds, processions, and high-energy submissions—mirror the excitement building up for the 2026 polls. This surge comes amid the Congress’s efforts to reposition itself as a formidable opposition force in Assam, focusing on issues like development, youth empowerment, and inclusive governance.

As the extended deadline approaches on January 28, more aspirants are expected to join the fray. The final ticket distribution will be a key test of the party’s internal democracy and ability to balance regional, generational, and community interests.

This unprecedented response not only bolsters the Congress’s financial and organizational base but also sends a strong message about the party’s readiness to contest vigorously in the upcoming Assam Assembly elections. Stay tuned for updates on ticket allotments, campaign strategies, and how this momentum translates into electoral gains in 2026.
