Assam CM Raises Alarm Over BCPL’s ₹500 Crore Annual Loss, Seeks Revival Plan

Dibrugarh, Assam: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has expressed serious concerns over the financial health of Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Limited (BCPL), a key petrochemical company in Lepetkata, Dibrugarh. The company has been grappling with annual losses of approximately ₹500 crore for the past two years, raising alarms about its sustainability.

During his visit to BCPL, CM Sarma highlighted the company’s heavy reliance on bank loans, which has exacerbated its financial challenges. “The road ahead for BCPL is tough. With annual losses of ₹500 crore and dependence on bank loans, the project is in a precarious position. Continued borrowing could lead to major issues in the future,” he stated.

Despite the grim situation, the Chief Minister assured that stakeholders, including Oil India Limited (OIL), Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL), the Assam government, and Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL), are collaborating to find a solution. GAIL holds a 70% stake in BCPL, while the Assam government, OIL, and NRL collectively own 30%.

“Together, we are working to pull BCPL out of this crisis. The state government is committed to supporting the company and ensuring its long-term sustainability,” Sarma added.

The financial instability of BCPL has prompted urgent discussions among stakeholders, with strategic decisions expected soon to revive the struggling petrochemical giant. The Assam government’s proactive approach aims to safeguard the company’s future and its contribution to the region’s economy.

Stay tuned for further updates on BCPL’s revival plan and its impact on Assam’s industrial landscape.
