Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has addressed criticism over the celebration of Bihar Day in Assam, emphasizing the importance of cultural exchange and unity. Sarma pointed out that Assam Day, commemorating the arrival of Sukapha, is celebrated across multiple states, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka, and Gujarat, as well as in Sri Lanka.
“If Assam Day is observed in Bihar, there’s no issue in celebrating Bihar Day in Assam,” Sarma stated, highlighting that such events are officially recognized in the presence of state Governors. He dismissed concerns about Assam Day’s observance in districts like Tinsukia, stressing its national significance.
The Chief Minister also warned that unnecessary controversies could deter investments in Assam, urging a focus on economic growth and cultural harmony. His remarks come amid opposition from groups like Raijor Dal, which argue that Assam’s identity should not be diluted by celebrating another state’s foundation day.
Sarma reiterated that cultural exchanges between states should foster unity, not division, reinforcing his stance on promoting mutual respect and cooperation.
