In a landmark decision to boost higher education, the Assam Cabinet has approved the establishment of Swahid Kanaklata Barua University at Bholaguri Tea Estate in Gohpur with an investment of ₹400 crore. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma after a Cabinet meeting on June4.
- Location & Land Acquisition: The university will be developed on portions of the Bholaguri Tea Estate, requiring temporary relocation of residents. The government has promised rehabilitation, job opportunities, and VRS benefits for affected families.
- Industry 4.0 & 5.0 Focus: The institution will be Assam’s first university specializing in cutting-edge fields like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Quantum Computing, and Robotics, aligning with futuristic technological demands.
- Collaboration with Experts: Academic frameworks will be designed in consultation with IIT Guwahati and JNU to ensure a globally competitive curriculum.
- Honoring a Freedom Fighter: The university is named after Swahid Kanaklata Barua, a revered Assam martyr, symbolizing courage and progress.
