Assam Assembly Election Dates to Be Announced Within 60 Days

Guwahati, December 27, 2025 – Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Saturday that the dates for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections will be declared within the next 60 days. The declaration came during the BJP’s two-day state executive committee meeting at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra in Guwahati, where party leaders geared up for the upcoming polls.

Addressing around 800 party workers, along with all MPs and MLAs from across the state, Sarma highlighted the government’s achievements over the past decade. He emphasised the BJP’s focus on development, stating, “Earlier, people were made to believe that nothing could be achieved without protests. But the BJP’s priority has always been development. Therefore, today, works ranging from medical colleges in various districts to the construction of bridges over the Brahmaputra have been completed.”

On employment, the Chief Minister noted that while the initial target was 1.5 lakh jobs, the government has successfully provided employment to 2 lakh people in five years. He underscored that both development and the protection of the state’s identity remain equally important priorities.

The meeting, on its second day, also reviewed the current political scenario and finalised an organisational blueprint for the 2026 elections. Key national leaders present included newly elected BJP national executive working president Nitin Nabin, national organisational general secretary B.L. Santhosh, Assam election in-charge Baijayant Jay Panda, co-in-charge Sunil Sharma, North-East coordinator Sambit Patra, and state in-charge Harish Dwivedi.

With the Assembly’s term ending in May 2026 and polls expected in March-April, the BJP is intensifying preparations to seek a third consecutive term under Sarma’s leadership.
