Guwahati, December 18: At a press conference held today at the Dispur Press Club, the ‘Assam Barta’ daily newspaper group, published from Majuli’s Island, announced several important awards for the year 2026. On the occasion of its sixth anniversary, the group’s publisher Tonay Bora, deputy editor Abhijit Bora, and staff reporter Pulin Kakati addressed the media and announced the recipients of the 2026 ‘Sahitya Unmesh Award’, ‘Samaj Hitaishi Award’, ‘Jananeta Dr. Purnanarayan Singh Rajnitigyo Award’, ‘Yuva Rajnitigyo Award’, and ‘Homen Borgohain Sanbadikota Award’.
The group named renowned litterateur and current president of the Assam Sahitya Sabha, Dr. Basanta Kumar Goswami, as the recipient of the 2026 Sahitya Unmesh Award. Dr. Goswami has made unprecedented contributions to the field of Assamese language and literature. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to Assam’s social, cultural, and media sectors, the Samaj Hitaishi Award will be presented to Nripen Das, managing director of the leading satellite channel “Assam Live 24” and the NRD Group. He has consistently served as a guiding light, bringing hidden talents from various spheres of Assam’s society to the forefront.
The ‘Jananeta Dr. Purnanarayan Singh Rajnitigyo Award ’ will be conferred on Ramakanta Deori, MLA from the Morigaon constituency. During his tenure, MLA Deuri has worked tirelessly to advance the constituency in all directions, with his leadership playing a particularly significant role in the development of tourism. The ‘Yuva Rajnitigyo Award ’ will be given to Dipluranjan Sharma, MLA from the Samaguri constituency, for his role as a guiding figure in youth politics, a powerful fighter in the political arena, and his contributions to social and cultural fields.
Additionally, the ‘Homen Borgohain Journalism Award’ will be presented to senior journalist Anupam Chakraborty. Known to all as a steadfast and composed journalist with long-standing involvement in the profession, Chakraborty has left a lasting impact on journalism in the state. The group stated that these awards are intended to recognise the hard work and dedication of journalists who have made enduring contributions to the field of journalism in Assam.
It may be mentioned that the awards will be formally presented on February 8, 2026, during the sixth anniversary celebration of ‘Assam Barta’, as informed by the group’s director and publisher, Tonay Bora.
