Amrit Bharat Express Train: A New Era of Affordable and Modern Rail Travel Begins in Assam

In a landmark development for rail enthusiasts and daily commuters, the Indian Railways has introduced the state-of-the-art Amrit Bharat Express train, significantly upgrading long-distance travel options across India, with a special focus on Assam and the Northeast region. On Sunday, January 18, 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually flagged off this modern non-AC sleeper service, marking a historic moment for the people of Dibrugarh and surrounding areas.

The Amrit Bharat Express train (Train No. 15949) commenced its maiden journey from Dibrugarh shortly after the inauguration, symbolizing India’s commitment to providing world-class facilities at affordable prices. This launch is part of a broader initiative to expand the Amrit Bharat fleet, which now includes multiple new routes connecting remote regions to major cities.

Historic Flag-Off by PM Modi and Key Highlights

The flagging-off ceremony took place virtually from Kaliabor (Nagaon district), Assam, where PM Modi also laid the foundation stone for the ₹6,957-crore Kaziranga Elevated Corridor project. The Amrit Bharat Express train from Dibrugarh to Gomti Nagar (Lucknow) was one of two services inaugurated from Assam, the other being Kamakhya-Rohtak.

At the event in Dibrugarh’s Banipur Railway Station, dignitaries including Rajya Sabha MP Rameshwar Teli, Assam Power Minister Prasanta Phukan, and senior railway officials were present. Minister Phukan described the day as “historic for Dibrugarh,” highlighting how the train offers modern amenities like CCTV cameras, enhanced safety features, and a comfortable journey comparable to a night bus.

“The benefit that Assam will get through these Amrit Bharat Express is great. Our travel is now easier,” Phukan stated, thanking PM Modi and the Railway Department for prioritizing the Northeast.

MP Rameshwar Teli emphasized the train‘s extensive coverage: “This Amrit Bharat Express will run from Dibrugarh to Gomti Nagar in Lucknow, covering approximately 3,000 kilometers in about 40 hours.”

The railway department welcomed the train at Moranhat Station with traditional conch shell blowing, allowing the public to view the modern coaches up close.
