Amit Shah Inaugurates New Guwahati Police Commissionerate Building and Intelligent City Surveillance System

Guwahati, December 29, 2025: Union Home Minister Amit Shah took a historic step towards modernizing police infrastructure in Guwahati on Monday by inaugurating the new permanent building of the Guwahati Police Commissionerate and the Intelligent City Surveillance System (ICSS). These two projects, developed at a combined cost of ₹292 crore, are expected to significantly strengthen security in the largest city of Northeast India.

The new 10-storey building (including basement and ground floor) of the Guwahati Police Commissionerate, located in Khanapara, was constructed at a cost of ₹111 crore. It will house all branches of Guwahati Police under one roof, with seating capacity for approximately 400 officers and staff, along with a library and archive facilities. The eco-friendly structure features 100% rainwater harvesting, wastewater treatment plants, and solar panels capable of generating 42.3 kW of electricity.

During the same event, the Home Minister inaugurated the ₹181 crore Intelligent City Surveillance System, which includes an advanced Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) set up within the new building. Equipped with around 2,000 CCTV cameras and 60 citizen safety and alert mechanisms, the system will greatly improve real-time monitoring, traffic management, and emergency response across the city.

Shah also unveiled an exhibition on the new criminal laws, organized by Assam Police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID), aimed at raising public awareness about the key features and implementation of the recently enacted legislations.

Additionally, the Home Minister flagged off 39 mobile forensic vans to be deployed across districts in the state, enhancing scientific and swift crime investigation capabilities.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, and other senior officials.

These initiatives mark a milestone in transforming Guwahati into a smarter and more secure city, bolstering law enforcement and public safety in the region.
