Guwahati, January 9, 2026: In a significant boost to Assam’s opposition unity, Rajya Sabha MP Ajit Kumar Bhuyan’s “Jatiya Dal Asom” is set to formally merge with the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) today.
The merger ceremony is scheduled for 11 AM at the Public Works Department auditorium in Dispur. Both MP Bhuyan and AJP General Secretary Jagadish Bhuyan have confirmed the development, stating that the move will significantly strengthen the regionalist party.
“This unification will enhance our organisational capabilities and consolidate regional forces,” said Jagadish Bhuyan.
Ajit Bhuyan, elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2020 with support from Congress, AIUDF, CPI, and independent MLAs, currently heads the anti-BJP opposition forum “Asom Sonmilito Morcha (Asom)”. His Rajya Sabha term concludes in 2026.
Under AJP President Lurinjyoti Gogoi’s leadership, the party has been building a strong base among Assam’s regionalist voters. Political analysts view this merger as a strategic step to revitalise the opposition ahead of the crucial 2026 Assam Assembly elections, potentially reshaping anti-BJP alliances.
Sources close to the MP indicate he may step away from active politics post the upcoming polls, though Bhuyan has not issued an official statement on the matter.
This development comes amid ongoing efforts to forge a broader opposition front in Assam, highlighting growing momentum against the ruling BJP.
