Cultural Grandeur Meets Infrastructure Revolution: Ptime minister Narendra Modi’s High-Impact Assam Visit 2026

Asom Barta,Guwahati, January 17, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Assam today for a significant two-day visit (January 17-18, 2026), blending cultural celebration with major infrastructure development. This marks his second trip to the state in less than a month, underscoring the central government’s focus on Northeast progress ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections.

The highlight of Day 1 was the grand Bagurumba Dwhou 2026 event at the Arjun Bhogeswar Barua Sports Complex (Sarusajai Stadium) in Guwahati. Prime Minister Modi witnessed an extraordinary performance by over 10,000 Bodo artists from 81 Assembly constituencies across 23 districts. The traditional Bagurumba folk dance, known as the “Butterfly Dance,” symbolizes nature, peace, joy, and harmony, deeply rooted in Bodo heritage and linked to festivals like Bwisagu (Bodo New Year). The synchronized mega presentation showcased Assam’s rich indigenous culture on a national stage.

Upon arrival at Guwahati Airport around 5:20 PM, the Prime Minister was greeted with a massive rally. He later proceeded to the stadium for the evening event starting at 6:00 PM. He stayed overnight at the Koinadhara State Guest House No. 1.

The visit follows Prime Minister Modi‘s flag-off of India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper Express from Malda Town Railway Station in West Bengal earlier in the day. This historic train connects Howrah (Kolkata) to Kamakhya (Guwahati), offering faster, comfortable overnight travel with modern amenities like cushioned berths, advanced suspension, noise reduction technology, automatic doors, and vestibules. The fully air-conditioned train includes 11 AC 3-tier, 4 AC 2-tier, and 1 First AC coaches, serving diverse passenger classes and strengthening rail links between eastern India and the Northeast.

On Day 2 (January 18), Prime Minister Modi departed from Khanapara at 9:30 AM towards Kaliabor (Kaliabhomora) in Nagaon district. At 11:00 AM, he addressed a public rally at Mauchandrapathar field and performed the bhoomi pujan (foundation stone laying) for the ambitious Kaziranga Elevated Corridor Project, valued at over ₹6,950 crore.

This landmark initiative involves four-laning the Kaliabor-Numaligarh section of National Highway 715 (formerly NH-37), including a 34.5 km elevated wildlife-friendly corridor through Kaziranga National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). The project features bypasses at Jakhalabandha and Bokakhat, passing through Nagaon, Karbi Anglong, and Golaghat districts. It aims to enhance connectivity to Upper Assam (including Dibrugarh and Tinsukia), reduce traffic congestion, minimize human-wildlife conflicts, and ensure safe animal movement across the highway that bisects the park.

During the same Kaliabor programme, the Prime Minister virtually flagged off two new Amrit Bharat Express trains to boost rail connectivity:

  • Guwahati (Kamakhya)–Rohtak Amrit Bharat Express
  • Dibrugarh–Lucknow (Gomti Nagar) Amrit Bharat Express

These services will provide safer, more convenient travel between the Northeast and northern India.

The programme concluded around 12:15 PM, after which Prime Minister Modi returned to Guwahati Airport and departed for Delhi at 1:00 PM.

Prime Minister Modi‘s Assam visit 2026 highlights the government’s commitment to cultural preservation and infrastructure advancement. From the vibrant Bagurumba celebration to transformative projects like the Kaziranga elevated corridor and expanded rail networks, these initiatives promise better connectivity, wildlife protection, and economic growth for Assam.

The visit underscores the Centre’s push for Northeast development, cultural preservation, and enhanced rail & road infrastructure ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections.
