Guwahati, January 11, 2026 — In a major boost for the Congress party ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, several prominent leaders from different political and community backgrounds joined the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) today in a high-profile ceremony at Manabendra Sharma Chowk, Guwahati.
The event was attended and addressed by APCC President and Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi.
Key joinings included:
- Rejaul Karim Sarkar, long-time former President of All Assam Minorities Students’ Union (AAMSU)
- Former AAMSU leaders: Azizur Haque (Advisor), Dilwar Hussain & Khan Hussain Zaman (Vice-Presidents), Sirajul Sarkar
- Former BJP leader Manoj Kumar Mahanta
- Rup Kumar Medok, former President of Mising Minority Council (MMK)
- Sheela Basumatary & Arun Basumatary (UPPL)
- Advocate Alakesh Medhi
- Babul Saharia
- And several other notable personalities
While welcoming the new members, Gaurav Gogoi launched a sharp political attack on the BJP-led state government and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
In his hard-hitting speech, Gogoi said:
“Today Assam’s land and its people are in crisis. Fear has been systematically created across the state. People are restless but unable to express their pain. We have resolved to end this politics of fear forever. The Assamese are proud — our history includes defeating the Mughals. Only a united Bor Axom can remain strong.”
He further targeted the Chief Minister directly:
“The government knows that if the people of Assam unite, Himanta Biswa Sarma will not remain Chief Minister. He is not an arrogant king — he is just an ordinary person. If he believes he can rule forever like a monarch, that is his biggest mistake.
In 2026, the people will show that no one is afraid of him. The day Assam stands united, the people will ask: ‘Who is Himanta Biswa Sarma?’
In Assam, the people are the real kings — no individual can become a king.”
Notably, during the speech, the call for Azan began. Gaurav Gogoi paused respectfully and resumed his address only after the Azan concluded.
Political analysts view today’s large-scale defections and Gaurav Gogoi’s aggressive tone as clear signals that the Congress is aggressively building a strong anti-BJP narrative and organisational strength for the crucial 2026 Assam Assembly elections.
