Opposition Unity for 2026 Assam Polls
Strong Attack on AIUDF MLA in Chenga
Guwahati, January 10, 2026: In a fiery public address, Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi on Friday evening launched a bold and direct challenge to Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, daring him to contest the upcoming Assembly election from the Sivasagar constituency.
Speaking at a massive public rally in Dongra, Barpeta, Gogoi declared:
“It is not Himanta Biswa Sarma who rules Upper Assam — I am here in Upper Assam. I am Akhil Gogoi. Let Himanta come to Upper Assam — I will defeat him outright. He will have to cry the same day and say goodbye to Assam politics on that very day.”
Gogoi escalated his challenge by mocking the Chief Minister’s alleged financial muscle in elections.
“Come to Sivasagar. Bring ₹200 crore. Last time you came with ₹100 crore to defeat Gaurav Gogoi — we still defeated you. This time bring ₹200 crore to fight Akhil Gogoi. I will come with just ₹1 crore and I will defeat Himanta outright,” he thundered.
The Raijor Dal chief further accused Himanta Biswa Sarma of “selling Assam” by aligning too closely with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
“The self-respecting voters of Upper Assam and the nationalist voters of Sivasagar will never vote for someone who has sold the state,” Gogoi asserted.
He also offered an alternative challenge — if the Chief Minister was afraid to contest in Sivasagar, he should contest from Mariani instead. However, Gogoi made it clear that he himself would not leave Sivasagar to contest from any other seat, including the former Jalukbari area.
In a significant political announcement, Akhil Gogoi revealed that Raijor Dal, Congress, CPI(M), and CPI(ML) will contest the upcoming Assam Assembly elections together as a united opposition front.
“To defeat the BJP, it is the need of the hour for all opposition parties to come together,” he said.
Gogoi also targeted the Chenga Assembly constituency, stating that Raijor Dal would field its own candidate there. He launched a scathing attack on sitting AIUDF MLA Ashraf-ul Hussain, accusing him of indirectly supporting the BJP in practice.
“This time we want a legislator from the minority community from our own party — someone who will genuinely work for the rights of the minority community,” Gogoi emphasized.
Political observers believe Gogoi’s aggressive challenge and call for opposition unity could significantly shape the pre-poll narrative ahead of the Assam Assembly elections.
